Sam Thurston  Narrative  Bio

I was born in 1943. I went to The Cooper Union in New York City for one year, then left to work on my own. My first youthful work was of made up scenes, then, after Cooper, still lives, then portraits and self portraits, then I returned to imaginary figure and street scenes, which I did concurrently with working from life. Then I added reliefs in clay, reliefs both from life and imagination. Then the reliefs became fully three dimensional sculpture. Then I became interested in relating my work to architecture which meant doing pattern and decoration. (There are no examples of this work in this current show). Working with clay and architectural decoration prompted me to make decorated pots.
So now I have a broad repertoire:  from life and imagination, still life, portrait, figure, relief, fully round, decoration and pots.
